Your First Visit in 3 Simple Steps

Ensuring a comfortable experience for our patients

STEP 01

Dental Assessment & Discussion

Each new patient registration/assessment is a longer length appointment than our routine check ups. We ensure there is extra time for every new patient visiting Smile Up to fully discuss all their concerns and questions with the GDP and have their treatment plan explained.

STEP 02

Discuss any concerns or questions

At Smile Up Dental, your first exam is all about understanding you. We take the time to carefully discuss any concerns, discomfort, or goals you may have, so nothing gets overlooked. Our experienced team includes clinicians who specialise in orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry, and all aspects of restorative care, meaning you’ll receive tailored advice and treatment options designed specifically for your smile.

STEP 03

Discuss Treatment Plan

Once we’ve completed your examination, we’ll walk you through your personalised treatment plan in clear, simple terms. We’ll explain what we’ve found, outline your options, and discuss the benefits, timelines, and costs involved — so you can make informed decisions with confidence. Whether your needs are orthodontic, cosmetic, or restorative, our team will ensure you feel comfortable, supported, and fully involved every step of the way.

FAQS

I’m scared of the dentist. What if I’m too nervous to come in?

You’re not alone. Around half the population avoids regular dental visits because of fear. We understand how real dental anxiety is — and we’ve built our entire approach around helping nervous patients feel safe, heard and in control.

The hardest part is often booking that first appointment. Once you’re here, we take things at your pace and make sure you feel comfortable every step of the way.

How do you help patients with dental phobia?

We treat dental anxiety seriously. That means:

  • Taking extra time to listen to your concerns

  • Explaining everything clearly before we begin

  • Moving at a pace you’re comfortable with

  • Offering sedation options if needed

Our goal is simple: to make sure you never feel rushed, judged or pressured.

Do you offer sedation for nervous patients?

Yes. We offer intravenous (IV) conscious sedation for patients who feel particularly anxious or have avoided treatment because of fear.

IV sedation:

  • Keeps you conscious but deeply relaxed

  • Reduces anxiety significantly

  • Helps control the gag reflex

  • Makes longer treatments feel much easier

  • Often leaves you remembering very little of the procedure

This means that no treatment is out of reach, even if you’ve struggled in the past.

What happens at my first appointment?

Your first visit is longer than a routine check-up — and that’s intentional.

We allow extra time so you can:

  • Fully discuss your concerns

  • Ask questions

  • Understand your oral health

  • Have your treatment options clearly explained

There’s no rushing. Just a thorough assessment and a personalised treatment plan you feel confident about.

I’ve been avoiding the dentist for years. Will I be judged?

Absolutely not. Many of our patients haven’t seen a dentist in a long time because of fear or past experiences. Our focus is on moving forward — not looking back.

You’ll be treated with compassion and respect, always.

When should my child first see a dentist?

Early visits are incredibly important. Positive first experiences at the dentist help shape how your child feels about dental care for life.

We can’t overstate how important those early appointments are.

Why are regular dental visits so important for children?

Tooth decay is still the most common reason children aged five to nine are admitted to hospital — often for multiple extractions under general anaesthetic.

The good news? In most cases, it’s preventable.

Regular dental visits help:

  • Detect problems early

  • Teach children how to brush properly

  • Guide parents on managing sugar in foods and drinks

  • Build trust so children aren’t fearful of future visits

Prevention is always easier (and far less stressful) than treatment under general anaesthetic.

How do you help nervous children?

Our children’s dentist, Auri, is known for quickly building trust with even the most nervous young patients.

She:

  • Speaks in child-friendly language

  • Moves at a gentle pace

  • Focuses on creating positive experiences

  • Helps children feel proud and confident

Our aim is to set your child up for a lifetime of healthy, stress-free dental visits.

What if my child is very anxious?

That’s completely normal. Many children feel unsure at first.

We focus on:

  • Building rapport before starting treatment

  • Explaining things in a non-scary way

  • Encouraging rather than forcing

  • Creating positive reinforcement

A calm first experience can change everything.
