What is laser dentistry?
A dental laser uses a focused beam of light to treat gums and other soft tissue. It is quiet and doesn’t vibrate like a drill. Because it is precise, less of the healthy tissue around the area is disturbed.
At our Lewisham practice we use it to treat gum disease and for soft-tissue work. It can suit you if you have bleeding gums or sensitive teeth, or if the sound of the drill puts you off.
Why choose laser treatment?
- There is no drill noise or vibration.
- Many patients need less anaesthetic, and some need none.
- The laser seals the tissue as it works, so there is usually little bleeding.
- Swelling is usually mild and the area often heals quickly.
- It can be a gentler option if you feel nervous about dental treatment.
A laser doesn’t suit every case. If it isn’t right for you, we’ll explain the other options, such as a deep clean with our hygienist or Airflow polishing.

What happens during laser treatment
Check and plan
Your dentist checks your teeth and gums. They explain whether a laser suits your treatment and what it will involve.
Protective glasses
You wear special glasses while the laser is in use.
Treatment
There is no drilling sensation. Most patients feel little more than slight warmth in the area.
Afterwards
Swelling is usually mild. Most patients go straight back to their day. We’ll tell you how to look after the area while it heals.
