Gum Disease

Gum Disease Lewisham – Greenwich – Blackheath

Gum disease isn’t just the biggest cause of tooth loss in the over-45s, it’s also been shown to cause type 2 diabetes and linked to stroke, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and low birth weight babies.

Yet research suggests that as many as 83% of adults in the UK have some form of gum disease. The good news is that treating gum disease and then stopping it from coming back is relatively straightforward — it’s basically a case of cleaning your teeth properly (which most people aren’t brilliant at…).

It starts with a check up and a hygiene appointment. If you’re suffering from a bad case of gum disease we’ll ask you to come in for a few hygiene appointments in quick succession to get a handle on it, but once it’s cleared up you’ll be able to keep it at bay between your check ups using the teeth cleaning tips we’ll give you.

We will clean your teeth above and below the gum line to ensure that we remove all remnants of the infected deposits that stick to your teeth. Usually we’re able to clean your teeth without the use of local anaesthetic — and our Airflow system is a lot more pleasant than traditional scale and polish techniques that use metal scrapers. If you’re still nervous or find it a little sensitive we can numb your mouth up to make it more comfortable.

What’s So Good About Tackling Gum Disease?

  • You’ll dramatically improve your chances of keeping your natural teeth for life.
  • By preventing infection entering your bloodstream through your gums you’ll protect yourself against type 2 diabetes and guard against the thickening of your blood vessel walls, the cause of stroke and heart disease (also associated with Alzheimer’s and low birth weight babies).
  • You’ll have noticeably fresher breath.

We offer an advanced periodontal assessment and treatment costing £150 for people with moderate to severe cases of gum disease, with a GDP with a special interest in periodontics.

What to Expect

If we detect gum disease during your check up you’ll be referred to a hygienist who will clean your teeth above and below the gum line. Some patients may need antibiotics and for others we may recommend gum surgery.

Once your condition has stabilised it’s simply a case of coming in for your routine hygiene visits and keeping on top of your oral health routine at home — we’ll give you all the tools and tips you need to keep your mouth as free from bacteria as possible.
