Dental Health And Hygiene – Turning And New Leaf In 2019

Have you started thinking about your New Year’s resolutions for 2019 yet? Maybe you feel like you could brush up (pardon the pun!) on your dental and oral hygiene routine? Or you want to make sure you visit the dentist more often for routine check-ups? Read on to learn about how hygienist appointments play a crucial role in your dental wellbeing.

Post-Christmas hygienist appointment

The festive season can really take its toll on your teeth and we all know that the Christmas diet is generally pretty high in sugar. Wine is a particular culprit, containing tannins that leave tenacious stains and reduce saliva production, resulting in lingering food particles and bacteria that can eventually lead to a build-up of plaque and tartar and even gum disease. Why not book a post-Christmas hygienist appointment where we can carry out a scale and polish to remove tenacious surface stains that can’t be tackled through brushing alone. A scale and polish involves your hygienist ‘scraping’ your teeth to remove plaque and tartar – your teeth are then polished in order to render the surfaces smooth. Here at Smile Up, we use the Airflow teeth polishing, a more comfortable and efficient way of removing such staining.

Airflow teeth polishing at Smile Up

The Airflow polishing system uses a mix of water, fine powder particles and compressed air instead of the traditional scraping tool which can be uncomfortable and make patients feel uneasy. If you suffer with sensitive teeth, you’ll find this method favourable – it’s also 3 times faster than traditional methods.

New patient examinations at Smile Up

We relish welcoming new patients at our practice here in Lewisham and during your first visit to us we will carry out a comprehensive dental examination that allows us to build a picture of your dental and oral health as well as your general wellbeing – it’s important to remember that your oral health is a window into your overall health.

As a new patient we will:

  • Carry out a check of your medical history and record any historical dental pain.
  • Carry out a clinical examination of teeth, gums, face, jaw and neck.
  • Screen for oral cancer.
  • Check for signs of gum disease.
  • Take X-rays and photos of your teeth.
  • Investigate any signs of teeth that appear damaged or susceptible.
  • Deliver a full diagnosis, written custom treatment plan and outline of all costs.

We are open 7 days a week to accommodate our patients’ busy schedules. Our friendly multi-lingual team speak several languages including English, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Bulgarian and Polish – our website is also available in the languages listed with the addition of Greek.
