Earlier this year, the government announced a plan to eradicate smoking in the UK by 2030. With only 14% of the population smoking (compared to 40% in the 1980s) it’s clear that we are all more health conscious and understand the risks of smoking in much more detail. Smoking poses a huge risk to your dental health and hygiene and this can often be overlooked compared to other smoking-related issues. Let’s explore the benefits of quitting smoking for your teeth and gums.

Restore your gum health
Many people don’t necessarily think about the effect smoking has on the gums. Even if your teeth are only slightly discoloured as a result of smoking and you brush and floss well, you will still be susceptible to tooth loss over time, because your gums won’t have the capacity to support them. Why? Bacteria build-up caused by gum disease results in receding gums over time and gradually the bone holding the tooth in place is destroyed. It has definitively been proven that quitting smoking does indeed improve your gum health over time – even more reason to quit!
Curb discolouration
It’s no secret that smoking causes discoloured teeth. This can leave you feeling self conscious about your smile and even stop you smiling completely. Stopping smoking will prevent your teeth from becoming discoloured further and teeth whitening treatment can whiten your teeth to make your smile look bright and healthy.
Bad breath
Even chewing on gum and eating mints can’t completely mask the smell that smoking leaves on your breath. Bad breath from smoking can knock your confidence and affect your relationships with others. Quitting smoking, in conjunction with regular hygienist appointments, will ensure your breath is fresh and that you feel confident around others.
If you’re looking to go smoke-free in 2020, here at Smile Up Dental we can help support you and point you in the direction of the relevant professional help. We know how hard quitting smoking can be and applaud everyone who is starting their smoke-free journey this year.
