Dental Implants

Dental implants are probably the most life changing of all the developments in modern dentistry because they reverse all the bad things around tooth loss and restore your appearance, your ability to eat whatever you want, and — most importantly of all — your confidence, all in one go.

That’s no small feat considering people with missing teeth consistently report feeling anxious about how they look. It’s true that there are alternative options for missing teeth such as dentures or bridges, but what you get with implants feels like having your natural tooth back and as far as your body is concerned it is a natural tooth — your jaw treats the implant like a tooth root and grows around it. If you have lived with missing teeth for some time your jaw bone will have decreased in size, which can have an ageing effect, so reversing that process can do wonders for your vitality too.

Looked after properly a dental implant should last a lifetime, so it’s an investment that will really pay you back in terms of the quality of the life you enjoy. They’re a particularly good option if you’ve lost all of your teeth because a full denture can potentially be held in place with 4 or 6 implants. You get to go back to how life was with a full set of natural teeth. Remember that?

We have one of the only 3D digital CT scanners in the Blackheath, Lewisham and Greenwich areas which means we can assess your bone density before we start, something that isn’t possible with a standard x-ray machine. That means we can plan your treatment with more precision and the result is a quicker surgical procedure and often a much reduced recovery time. Digital scanners are safer too because they give off significantly less radiation.

What’s so good about dental implants?

  • They feel just like natural teeth.
  • They work just like natural teeth, so you can eat anything you like again.
  • They look just like natural teeth.
  • They help keep your other teeth healthy because they’re easy to clean.
  • You’ll notice that your breath is fresher and there is less chance of developing tooth decay or gum disease because there are no gaps to trap bacteria or food.
  • They have a 95% success rate.

What to expect

Specially designed titanium screws are inserted directly into your jaw and a temporary restoration is then attached to the implant (this could be a crown, bridge or denture, depending on the number of teeth you require and where they are).

Over the next few months your natural bone fuses with the screw, helping to hold it firmly in place (this remarkable process is called osseo-integration). Then a final restoration will be fitted giving you a strong, beautiful and long lasting replacement tooth which feels just the same as your natural ones.

No other teeth need to be touched during the fitting of a dental implant and you’ll never again have to worry about removing your teeth to clean them at night.

Before your implants are fitted we will check your existing teeth, gums and jawbone and the overall health of your mouth. Various factors must be taken into account before any surgery is performed, which include:

  • The overall health of your teeth and gums.
  • The health of your jawbone, the amount of bone available and the bone density.
  • Your general health.
  • Your oral health habits and whether you smoke. If you smoke your chances of recovery may be affected as you are at a higher risk of infection.

A standard dental implant surgery takes 30 to 40 minutes. As it will be performed under a local anaesthetic you won’t feel anything, in fact it will be much like having a root canal therapy (which is painless). It is normally possible to extract a tooth in the same appointment and fit your new implant straight away. Sedation is available if you’re really nervous.
