Sedation

There’s no two ways about it, sedation can be an absolute lifesaver for really nervous patients who would otherwise be too anxious to go through with the dental treatments they desperately need.

Conscious sedation is the administration of a medicine to help you relax and to block pain. The effect is something like being awake but extremely relaxed and comfortable. You’ll be able to follow commands but may drift off to sleep, and that’s OK!

Another brilliant side effect of sedation is that it takes your gag reflex away, great news for anyone who hates fighting the urge to swallow when the dentist is poking around in your mouth… You will probably stay awake but with the sensation that you felt asleep and may not be able to speak clearly. We’re lucky enough to have Arie on our team who is experienced at providing intravenous sedation (IV, in a vein), but conscious sedation can also be taken orally.

What’s so good about dental sedation?

  • Are you kidding? It’s the perfect antidote to extreme nerves that would otherwise stop you from receiving dental care you need.
  • You’ll feel totally relaxed.
  • It removes pain and anxiety.
  • The medicine will wear off quickly so you can return to your everyday activities after your treatment.

What to expect

You will begin to feel drowsy and relaxed very quickly if it’s IV sedation. If you’re given medicine to swallow you’ll feel the effects after 30 to 60 minutes. Your breathing will slow down and your blood pressure may drop a little. We’ll monitor you every 3 to 5 minutes during your procedure to make sure you’re OK.

You shouldn’t need help with your breathing but you may receive extra oxygen through a mask. You may fall asleep, but you will wake up easily to respond to people in the room. You may be able to respond to verbal cues. Afterwards you may feel drowsy and not remember much about your procedure.

You should be able to go home 1 to 2 hours after your procedure as long as you have someone escorting you for the next 24 hours.
