Metal Braces

Metal braces are the most well known orthodontic treatment and they deliver reliable, long term results. They require a careful study of your mouth before a detailed treatment plan can be devised — the key measure of success is not simply where teeth end up, but whether they stay there.

Metal braces consist of brackets, which are small squares that are bonded directly to the front of each tooth to act like handles, and wire that puts pressure on the brackets to slowly move your teeth.

Brackets have elastic or metal ties holding the wire and springs might be placed on the wire to open or close the spaces between your teeth. We’ll ask you to continue seeing us after treatment has finished so we can check your teeth are secured in a sustainable position.

Patient Testimonial

What’s so good about metal brackets?

  • They’re reliable at producing great clinical outcomes.
  • They’re great value.
  • They’re flexible enough to cater for complex cases.

What to expect

You’ll feel some sensitivity and tightness each time your brace is tightened (every 4 weeks) which will last for a day or so. You’ll be able to eat normally while wearing a fixed appliance but try to avoid things like chewy or hard sweets and fizzy drinks because they’ll damage the appliance and your teeth. If you play a contact sport it’s worth wearing a gum shield to protect your mouth and the appliance.
